Chelva is one of those inland villages that sums up what lies less than an hour from Valencia city. Set in the Los Serranos region, about seventy kilometres away along the CV-35, it combines historic heritage and nature in a small, walkable place you can explore in a single day.

Chelva's Historic Quarters: Four Cultural Legacies

The old town reflects a past of coexistence between cultures: the Arab quarter of Benacacira, the Christian quarter of Las Ollerías, the Morisco quarter of El Arrabal and the Jewish quarter of El Azoque.

Each has its own layout of narrow lanes and whitewashed houses, with the odd corner painted blue, giving Chelva a look all its own in inland Valencia. Wandering with no fixed route from one quarter to the next is one of the best things to do here.

Plaza Mayor and the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles

The Plaza Mayor is the heart of local life, with the town hall and a stone fountain where people meet. Right there stands Chelva's best-known landmark, the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, regarded as one of the outstanding works of Valencian Baroque.

The Chelva River and the Ruta del Agua: A Natural Swimming Spot

The other highlight is water. The river rises very close to the village and flows through orchards and greenery before joining the Tuéjar. Along the way, La Playeta is a spot where the riverbed forms a calm natural pool, ideal for cooling off in summer.

The Ruta del Agua (Water Route) links the historic quarters with these riverside landscapes, combining heritage and nature in one walk.

A Simple Escape from Valencia

Chelva is a good summary of what many inland Valencian villages offer: a well-preserved old town, valuable religious architecture and a natural setting shaped by water that invites unhurried walking. It is an easy getaway for anyone who wants to leave the coast behind without giving up heritage or scenery.
